University Facilities sent out the following email at 1:30 pm today:
On Saturday, September 20th, from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, there will be a complete air conditioning outage in the Allied Health/Nursing Building, Clinical Sciences Research Building, Lions/LSU Clinics Building, Medical Education Building and the Resource Center Building. With the exception of the Animal Care spaces, there will not be any air conditioning anywhere in these buildings during this outage. Walk-in coolers will not be affected but limited access to any refrigeration units is recommended due to higher indoor air temperatures. This outage is necessary for a contractor to replace a large failing chilled water isolation valve in the Central Plant. This valve must be replaced as soon as possible. Further delay may result in total failure and an extended loss of air conditioning during regular weekday hours.
Because of the a/c shutdown both the Isché Library and the Library Commons will be closed on Saturday.
The Isché Library will reopen at 1:30 pm on Sunday, September 21st.
Congratulations to LSUSD clinical faculty member Dr. Frank Martello. The United Cerebral Palsy of Greater New Orleans (UCPGNO) recently honored him for his 30 years of volunteer service at the organization’s Dental Clinic. Since 1984, Dr. Martello has treated the oral health needs of thousands of developmentally disabled children and adults with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and autism. Additionally, Dr. Martello has provided oral screenings at Louisiana Special Olympics events for the past 20 years and helped establish the Farhad Grotto Dentistry for the Handicapped facility in Harahan.
Evidence-Based Practice is a term that is often bandied about but rarely understood. During the Library Lunchtime Learning session in September, we hope to clear up some of the mystery by taking attendees step by step through the EBP process, from identifying the clinical question through evaluating the decision made. Other topics of conversation include the resources that are most helpful for answering EBP questions as well as barriers to implementing EBP.

In one week the TedMed LiveStream will be available in the Library Commons at the Isché Library. We will be streaming content from 9 am to 4 pm on Wednesday, September 10th through Friday, September 12th.

A new selection of articles has been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Given the current Ebola outbreak, unprecedented in terms of number of people killed and rapid geographic spread, Science and Science Translational Medicine have made this collection of research and news articles on the viral disease freely available to researchers and the general public.
R statistical software is now available (by student request) on the 3 Library Commons computers. These computers are available to whenever the building is open and require an LSUHSC login and password.
R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics.
The LSUHSC Libraries are hosting an exhibition developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine. This exhibit was developed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War and the more than three million soldiers who fought in the war. Life and Limb: The Toll of the Civil War explores the experiences of disabled veterans, their role as symbols of the fractured nation and a stark reminder of the costs of the conflict.
The perspectives of surgeons, physicians, and nurses are richly documented in the history of Civil War medicine, which highlights the heroism and brutality of battlefield operations and the challenges of caring for the wounded during wartime. Yet the experiences of injured soldiers during the conflict and in the years afterwards are less well-known.
More than three million soldiers fought in the war from 1861-1865. More than half a million died, and almost as many were wounded but survived. Hundreds of thousands were permanently disabled by battlefield injuries or surgery, which saved lives by sacrificing limbs.
In addition to the travelling exhibition, there is a display in the Library’s New Books section with supplemental material from our own collection on surgery, prosthetics and the Civil War. Some of the materials featured include books from our collection, journal articles that can be accessed through our catalog, photocopied materials from our old & rare collection, and links to resources available online. The Exhibit is available beginning August 4, 2014 at the Ische Library in the Learning Commons. The supplementary display is on the New Books shelves next to the internal elevators.
The display will move to the Dental Library on August 25 and will be available for viewing there until September 12.
