The November/December 2011 issue of the publication Dean’s Notes has an interesting article reporting the number of recent RN graduates who have been unable to find jobs in nursing. Don’t like what you are reading? Critique the author’s research methodology.

Foundation Building to Begin

City Business reported yesterday that the LSU Health Foundation building (just north of the Resource Center Building) is set to begin construction soon. It will be construction site number 3 visible from the downtown Library’s windows.

BikeEasy bike map & incident reports

Local bipedal group Bike Easy is collecting bicycle crash statistics and putting them on the map. (Click image to go to the map).

Behold the “Incidents, Hazards, and Points of Interest” bike map, which is actively collecting incident reports via this form. Posts are moderated and will show up on the map in 24-48 hours. All incidents are displayed anonymously.

If you have been involved in a bicycle incident in the New Orleans area, put it on the map and bring awareness of the number of bicycle crashes that occur in New Orleans each year. And be careful out there.

Wikipedia goes dark tomorrow (1-18-12)

Wikipedia is “going dark” on Wednesday, January 18th to protest upcoming U.S. legislation on internet piracy and intellectual property. You will not be able to access any content.

In late 2011, the United States Congress proposed two legislative bills, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), which legal scholars and others have advised have the potential to significantly change the way that information can be shared through the Internet. It is the opinion of the English Wikipedia community that both of these bills, if passed, would be devastating to the free and open web. Source

McDonough 11 Move

The first move of McDonough 11 was completed to make way for the new University Medical Center.

Orleans Shoring (who is contracted to move the structure) just released a video of the move.

MLK, Jr Day Hours

Both the Isché & Dental Libraries will be closed on Monday, January 16th in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Both libraries will be open their regular hours on Sunday (1:30 – 10 pm for Isché and 11:30 am – 8 pm for Dental). And will reopen at 8 am on Tuesday, January 17th.

Taylor & Francis Online will be unavailable

Taylor & Francis Online will be undergoing maintenance on Friday 13th January 2012, starting at 5pm CST and finishing by 8pm CST. The platform may be unavailable for approximately one hour during the scheduled maintenance window.

Chocolate toothpaste developed by emeritus dental faculty

The Times-Picayune recently reported on a toothpaste based on a cocoa extract that was developed by LSU School of Dentistry professor emeritus Tetsuo Nakamoto.

Tetsuo Nakamoto, Chief Scientific Officer of Theodent and a professor emeritus at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, discovered the benefits of the cocoa extract years ago. He collaborated with researchers at Tulane University and the University of New Orleans to develop the find and create the toothpaste.

Theodent, as the toothpaste is called, costs $9.99 a tube and is available at Whole Foods. It does not contain fluoride.

In addition to books and journals, you can also check out headphones, dry erase markers, ethernet cords and cables for the big screen televisions in the commons area.

Health Resource Guides from City Health Dept

The New Orleans Health Department has issued a new Health Resource Guide entitled a Guide to Behavioral Health Resources in the Greater New Orleans Area which “provides information on accessing mental health and substance abuse resources in the Greater New Orleans area.” This new guide is in addition to A Guide to No or Low Pay Community Healthcare in Orleans Parish which was released in August 2011. Both brochures are available from the Health Department webpage as PDF downloads.
