For 3 decades, Healthy People has established benchmarks and monitored progress over time in order to encourage collaborations across sectors, guide individuals toward making informed health decisions, and measure the impact of prevention activities.
Healthy People 2020 continues in this tradition with the launch on December 2, 2010 of its ambitious, yet achievable, 10-year agenda for improving the NationÔÇÖs health. Healthy People 2020 is the result of a multiyear process that reflects input from a diverse group of individuals and organizations.

Ever notice that sometimes it’s difficult to tell exactly which tooth is hurting when you have a toothache?
Researchers in Germany have studied just that issue and will soon publish an article in the journal Pain with thier conclusions. It would seem that when it comes to pain in the mouth, the brain doesn’t descriminate location nearly as well as it does in other regions of the body.
A summary of the research was recently posted to the Wired Science Blog. The article, currently only available as an electronic proof, will be published soon.
I sure hope the volunteer test subjects were well compensated for their participation!

April is Donate Life Month!
Did you know that as of the beginning of April, 2010, there were 106,759 people on the waiting list to receive donated organs or tissues?
Each day, about 77 people receive organ transplants. However, 19 people die each day waiting for transplants that can’t take place because of the shortage of donated organs.
Signing up to become an organ and/or tissue donor is easy and very important.
You can save a life!
The Dental Library has compiled an archival web page in honor Dr. F. Harold Wirth, a former faculty member who’s influence is still felt in the Dental School more than 20 years after his death.
The late Dr. F. Harold Wirth, longtime professor at the LSU Dental School, was known around campus for his jovial manner and trademark greeting, “How’s your PMA?” That’s Positive Mental Attitude. He developed a comprehensive approach to dentistry and living that centered on balancing the key areas of work, play, love and worship. He believed that trust, the priceless ingredient in any relationship, is the natural result of sincerely caring about the patient. From trust comes quality which leads to excellence, career satisfaction, compensation and contentment.

Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. NCDHM messages and materials have reached millions of people in communities across the country.
In addition to National Children’s Dental Health Month, the ADA sponsors Give Kids a Smile day the first Friday of February. Give Kids A Smile was designed to provide education, preventative and restorative care to low-income children who do not have access to care.
The LSUHSC-NO School of Dentistry clinics in New Orleans and Baton Rouge will be celebrating Give Kids a Smile day with special guests and events.
So have a little fun and don’t forget to brush and floss!

Dr. Robert Brannon, professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, has received a tremendous accolade from the U.S. Air Force Office of the Surgeon General. Dr. Brannon, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, and an internationally recognized expert in oral and maxillofacial pathology and forensic dentistry, has been appointed Civilian National Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology to the Air Force Surgeon General. This three-year appointment is equivalent to the rank of a one-star (brigadier) general. Dr. Brannon is only the third person to hold this position.
ÔÇ£This rare honor is a fitting tribute to someone recognized by his peers as a giant in the fields of oral and maxillofacial pathology and forensic dentistry,ÔÇØ said Dean Henry Gremillion.

The American Dental Hygienists’ Association is encouraging dental hygienists and other dental professionals and supporters across the country to get involved with NDHM this October to increase public awareness of the oral health-total health connection and the importance of educating the entire family on situations which impact their oral health. It is imperative to start early with a daily oral care routine to help prevent cavities and periodontal disease. NDHM is the perfect time to spread that message even moreÔÇöwhile celebrating the profession of dental hygiene!
