New edition online: “Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology”

The Library is pleased to announce that we have purchased the latest edition of Devita, Hellman, and Rosenberg’s Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology (10th ed., 2015) online through our Books@Ovid platform.  Vincent Devita and his colleagues have been publishing this classic text since 1982!  The 10th edition of this definitive oncology resource includes several new chapters, and this online book will be updated quarterly with new content.

This title can be found via our library catalog: http://innopac.lsuhsc.edu/, and it can be accessed directly from the Books@Ovid platform.  For off campus access, be sure to log in through our Web Access Management system (WAM) using your library barcode number and PIN.

Faculty Publications Spotlight for June

A new selection of articles has been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Each month the Library is proud to present copies of eight of these publications in a rotating display of 16. They can be viewed in the Reference area, on the wall between the main entrance and the Library elevator, on the third floor of the Resource Center Building.

Library adds the CSE SCIENTIFIC STYLE AND FORMAT online!

The Library is pleased to announce that we now have an online subscription to the most recent edition of the Scientific style and format: the CSE manual for authors, editors, and publishers.  Currently in its 8th edition, the CSE style manual has been a standard reference for scientific publishing since 1960.  As it is the required format for Graduate Studies theses and dissertations, we are most excited to be able to offer our users this access both on and off campus.  For off campus access, be sure to log in through our Web Access Management system (WAM) using your library barcode number and PIN.

We hope this helps ease and simplify your writing process!

Welcome our new dental librarian

Welcome to our newest dental librarian, Wes!

Wesley Lucas started as the dental reference librarian on March 2, 2015. Wes is originally from Pascagoula, MS, and has lived in New Orleans for the past 3 years. He received his Master of Library and Information Sciences from Louisiana State University and his Bachelor of Arts, History, and Anthropology from the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

Wes comes to the Dental Library from Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, Tulane University, where he was a library technician in the microforms, newspapers, and government documents department. He also was the Special Collections Digital Services graduate assistant at the Hill Memorial Library at LSU in Baton Rouge.  He has worked in a variety of academic and public libraries throughout his education and is happy to start his professional librarian career here at LSUHSC-NO.

We are thrilled to have Wes as part of the Dental Library team!

Library Calendars 2015-2016

The calendars for both the Isché and Dental Libraries for fiscal year 2015-2016 have been posted. As always, the Library Commons adjacent to the Isché Library is open 24/7 unless the building is closed for maintenance or emergency.

NLM Shakespeare exhibit at Dental Library

The National Library of Medicine’s “And there’s the humor of it” Shakespeare and the Four Humors traveling exhibit is now available for viewing at the Dental Library through April 22nd. Come learn about the four humors and how they were believed to dictate a person’s health and demeanor. The Libraries have also put together a selection of books and articles that look at the development and advances of medicine during Shakespeare’s time.

Easter Hours this weekend are as follow:

The Isché Library will be open from 8 am to 8 pm on Thursday, April 2nd and then closed Friday through Sunday. It will reopen on Monday, April 6th at 8 am until 10 pm, resuming regular hours.

The Dental Library  will be open from 8 am to 5 pm on Thursday, April 2nd and then closed from Friday through Sunday. It will reopen on Monday, April 6th at 8 am until 5 pm; regular hours will be resumed on Tuesday, April 7th.

Libraries host NLM Shakespeare exhibit

The Isché and Dental Libraries are happy to host the National Library of Medicine’s “And there’s the humor of it” Shakespeare and the Four Humors traveling exhibit. Come learn about the four humors and how they were believed to dictate a person’s health and demeanor. The Libraries have also put together a selection of books and articles that look at the development and advances of medicine during Shakespeare’s time.

The exhibit will be available at the Isché Library on the third floor of the Resource Center from March 15th through April 2nd on the Downtown Campus. It will then be at the Dental Library on the third floor of the Administration Building from April 6th through 22nd at the Dental Campus.

Databases Beyond PubMed: March’s Library Lunchtime Learning

Choosing the right tool for the job is just as important in the library as it is in the clinic. PubMed/MEDLINE is a reliable and extensive resource, but it may not always be the appropriate one for your information need. During March’s Library Lunchtime Learning session, we’ll examine several other databases that could be appropriate to use in different circumstances.

Abstract Writing workshop

In scholarly writing, abstracts and citations have a great deal of impact in terms of touching the outside research community (after all, when was the last time you did not use abstracts to select which search results or conference posters you wanted to read in entirety). Yet, authors often spare them little attention, throwing together a few sentences before submitting a manuscript.

As part of the monthly Library Lunchtime Learning series, next week we will focusing on how to write strong abstracts that accurately represent your research while attracting potential readers. Additionally, we will cover a few guiding principles for citing sources.
