The ProQuest products, including our RefWorks database, will be unavailable for 5 hours beginning late Sunday evening into the wee hours of Monday morning.

Abstract Writing workshop

In scholarly writing, abstracts and citations have a great deal of impact in terms of touching the outside research community (after all, when was the last time you did not use abstracts to select which search results or conference posters you wanted to read in entirety). Yet, authors often spare them little attention, throwing together a few sentences before submitting a manuscript.

As part of the monthly Library Lunchtime Learning series, next week we will focusing on how to write strong abstracts that accurately represent your research while attracting potential readers. Additionally, we will cover a few guiding principles for citing sources.

Ische Elevator

The Isché Library internal elevator is out of order. And will remain out of order indefinitely while a part is ordered. Access to the 4th and 5th floors of the Library are via the staircase or the freight elevator with a staff escort. Check with the Circulation Desk for more information.

Carnival Time Hours

It’s parade time and that means holiday hours at the Libraries. Both Libraries (Isché and Dental) will be open regular hours on Friday, February 13th.

Saturday, February 14th, the Isché Library will be open from 9:30 am – 3 pm; the Dental Library will be closed as usual.

Sunday, February 15th, the Dental Library will be open it’s regular hours of 11:30 am – 8 pm; the Isché Library will be open from 12 noon – 5:30 pm.

Monday, February 16th, both the Isché and  Dental Libraries will be open 8 am – 5 pm.

Both Libraries will be closed on Mardi Gras, February 17th.

The Dental Library will be open 8 am – 5 pm Wednesday, February 18th – Friday, February 20th for Dental School Spring Break. The Isché Library will return to regular hours.

Faculty Publications Spotlight for February

A new selection of articles has been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Each month the Library is proud to present copies of eight of these publications in a rotating display of 16. The Isché Library now offers its first charging station, equipped with 4 inter-changeable tips. There is a standard USB tip, a Micro USB tip, an Apple Lightning tip and an Apple 30 pin tip. Not sure which one charges your phone or ipad? Stop by the charging station near the circulation desk on the 3rd floor and figure out which one works for you.

MLK, Jr Day Hours

Both the Dental and Isché Libraries will be open regular hours over the weekend of January 17th and 18th. But both Libraries will be closed on Monday, January 19th in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr’s Birthday.

3D printing coming soon!

The LSUHSC-NO Libraries is proud to announce that it has been awarded the first  National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region’s (NN/LM SCR) Emerging Technologies Award.  With the funds provided by this award, the Libraries will purchase two 3 dimensional printers and two 3 dimensional scanners to be placed in the libraries.  This equipment will be available for free to everyone affiliated with LSUHSC-NO.

LSUHSC-NO Libraries’ goal of this project is to provide students with a friendly, welcoming, environment to innovate, create, collaborate, and discover.  The library seeks to give students, staff, and faculty opportunities to explore 3D technology in an accessible location without exorbitant costs.  These scanners and printers will offer the means to build prototypes, create models, improve equipment, and so on, limited only by one’s imagination.

The mission of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) is to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public health by providing all U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information and improving the public’s access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health. The Program is coordinated by the National Library of Medicine and carried out through a nationwide network of health science libraries and information centers.  This year, the South Central Region instituted the Emerging Technology Award to to assist libraries in the integration of new and emerging technologies in their institutions to promote health information services.

HINARI Training at Tulane Med

On Friday, February 6th the Tulane Health Sciences Center Library and the Center for Continuing Education will offer an all day (8 am to 5 pm) accredited (AMA/CHES/MCHES/CECH/MSW-CE/MLA-CE) training class on Access to Global Health Resources. This training session is partially funded by an award from the National Library of Medicine.

The class will cover using PubMed via HINARI at partner institutions in developing countries. The instructor is Lenny Rhine, PhD, Coordinator of the E-Library Training Initiative, a Librarians Without Borders/Medical Library Association project.

Deadline for registration is Wednesday, February 4th. Cost is $25 for pre-registrants and $50 for day of. For more information, please see the attached flyer.

LibGuides Problems

All the Libraries’ LibGuides are currently experiencing very slow response time OR won’t load at all. We are working with the host company to solve the problem.

ORS Professional Development Series Presents Grants.gov

On Friday January 9th, from 10am – 11:30am, Nicole G. Hammill will present Grants.gov. The presentation will provide an overview of what Grants.gov is and expand on making grant applications to federal agencies. It will be held in Room 303 of the Lions Building.

Patient Education and Consumer Health workshops in January

Start 2015 by refreshing your knowledge about patient education and consumer health by attending the first Library Lunchtime Learning workshop of the new year, when we will be talking about health literacy and why it’s important, sources for science-based patient education, how to evaluate websites for trustworthiness, and guidelines for those creating their own patient education materials.
