Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) E-book Collection

As part of our New Books Display this month, we are highlighting the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) E-book Collection from Ovid Books. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), based in Australia and one of the premier evidence-based practice organizations in the world, has developed an evidence-based practice model that is considered a benchmark in the healthcare industry.

Carnival Hours

Rex 2012 on Napoleon Avenue

The Libraries will have reduced hours over the final weekend of carnival through Mardi Gras day.

The Isché Library will close at 5pm on Friday, February 9th and will be open regular hours, 9:30am-6pm, on Saturday, February 10th. On Sunday, February 11th the downtown library will be open from 12 noon to 8:30pm and on Monday, February 12th from 8am to 5pm.

The Dental Library will close at 5pm on Friday, February 9th and remain closed on Saturday, February 10th as usual. On Sunday February 11th the Dental Library will be open regular hours from 11:30am to 8pm and on Monday, February 12th from 8am to 5pm.

Both Libraries will be closed on Tuesday, February 13th, a university holiday.

Roman Street Parking Garage Closure

The elevator lobby on the 1st floor of the Roman Street parking garage will be closed over the weekend. The closure is due to completing the final phase of the parking garage resurfacing project. The closure will begin at 8am Saturday February 3rd and will reopen at 6am Monday February 5th.

Dental Library Upgrade

The Dental Library has upgraded its security gate.

Because of the installation of this new gate, the double door entrance will now act as both the entrance and exit.

LexisNexis Academic is now Nexis Uni

Our access to LexisNexis Academic has been transitioned to the new Nexis Uni. This revamp features a new streamlined search and is geared to helping you find the trusted information you need much more easily.

The new search screen looks like this:

The content in Nexis Uni is similar to what was offered in LexisNexis Academic. You can search for news articles, business information, and a wealth of legal sources. Also included are many full-text journals,  covering a bevy of topics.

Another feature of Nexis Uni is an increased level of personalization. Once you create an account in Nexis Uni, you have the opportunity to customize your search screen, create alerts for new content, and can share your search information and collaborate with colleagues.

February Spotlight on Faculty Publications

A new selection of articles has been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Each month the Library is proud to present copies of eight of these publications in a rotating display of 16. They can be viewed in the Reference area, on the wall between the main entrance and the Library elevator, on the third floor of the Resource Center Building.

Publications cited in the Faculty Publications database are harvested weekly from a variety of sources, such as PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL, to name a few. New England Journal of Medicine redesigned their website, and the “Download PDF” link has a new appearance. Instead of a link that says “Download PDF”, it is now represented by an arrow pointing down. The download arrow symbol is located on the left side of each article’s page.

National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week Event, Friday, January 26, 2018

This Friday, the LSUHSC Alcohol & Drug Abuse Center of Excellence (ADACE) will be hosting a seminar and discussion here on the downtown campus in association with NIDA’s National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week.

LA Dept of Health Renews Standing Order for Naloxone

Dr. Rebekah Gee, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health, has renewed the standing order for Naloxone, an antidote medication for the reversal of opioid overdose. This action allows laypeople to continue to receive Naloxone without having to get a direct prescription from a doctor.

ScienceDirect EBS Collection: French Health Sciences and German Medical

Parlez vous francais? Sprechen sie Deutsch? If you can understand those questions and can answer yes, then you may want to explore our last-but-not-least groups from the ScienceDirect EBS Collection.

The French Health Sciences category contains an array of medical topics, all in French.  You will find ebooks on physical therapy, anesthesia, cardiology, and more specialties, which will offer you a chance to hone your language skills while you glean knowledge about your chosen subject.

The same can be said of the category German Medical.  There seem to be quite a few books on orthopedics and psychiatry.  I’m just guessing though because I speak neither French nor German.  At any rate, you might want to take these categories for a spin and test your language skills.

This concludes the weekly spotlight on the ScienceDirect EBS Collection.  This varied group of ebooks will be available until June of this year.  At that time, we will be reviewing the usage of the collection and keeping the most used texts.  This is your opportunity to let us know what you want and need to be able to access.  By viewing a book you are voting for it.  And if there is a particular ebook in the collection you feel strongly about, let us know.  We appreciate your input about these ScienceDirect offerings!

Libraries are open!

Both Libraries and both campuses are open once again. Fingers crossed for no more freezing weather!

Campus Closure Extended Again

Both the downtown and the dental campuses will remain closed on Friday, January 19th. The rest of the weekend is a question mark, depending on water pressure.

If water pressure to our buildings improves, then the downtown library will open on Saturday and both libraries will reopen on Sunday.

*Edit* water pressure continues to be insufficient for plumbing use. The Libraries remain closed for the weekend.

Campus Closure Extended

Due to anticipated poor weather conditions. The entire campus will be shutting down at 3pm today. The Libraries and both the downtown and dental campuses will remain closed on Wednesday, January 17th. The Libraries plan to reopen on Thursday, January 18th at 8am.
