ScienceDirect EBS Collection: Biomedical Science and Medicine

EBS blog biomed revisedAs we kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month, we decided to highlight the Biomedical Science and Medicine category of the ScienceDirect EBS Collection. But if you review this category yourself, you will see there is just so much more. In addition to books on the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, there are texts covering research and treatment of a wide variety of cancers and other diseases.

There are texts on better health through nutrition and the consequences of poor nutrition, such as obesity and disease. Ebooks relating to drug research and sports medicine are available alongside texts covering biostatistics and data analysis.

If you are interested in the evolution of healthcare education, there are several relevant and timely texts here you might find interesting.  Books like The Transformation of Academic Health Centers: The Institutional Challenge to Improve Health and Well-Being in Healthcare’s Changing Landscape review the evolution of teaching hospitals and the changes necessary for us to stay successful and relevant.

Please take some time to peruse this collection.  No matter what your discipline, you are sure to find something to peak your interest.

And keep in mind that these ebooks will only be available until the end of June 2018.  Then we will be retaining access only to those texts which have received the most hits.  And this category has quite a few books that are relevant to our needs here at LSUHSC.  So dive in and explore!

ScienceDirect EBS Collection: Environmental Science

EBS blog Environmental ScienceThis week marks the 55th anniversary of the publication of Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. A revolutionary book of its time, Silent Spring was one of the first works to examine in depth the damage pesticides were doing to the environment.  And, by sparking awareness of the dangers, virtually gave birth to the environmental movement, consequently leading to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency.
What better time to spotlight the Environmental Science group of texts provided by the ScienceDirect EBS Collection available now. In this group you will find ebooks from 2013 to the present covering biodiversity and public health, radiation risk management, and one called Microbial Ecology and Health, which looks at infectious diseases from an holistic angle.
Please take some time to peruse the various categories of this collection. These ebooks are only available through June of 2018. After that, only the most-used selections will be added to our collection.

ScienceDirect EBS Collection: Computer Science

EBS blog Computer ScienceAmong the varied categories of ebooks in the new ScienceDirect EBS Collection are a few that might not seem too relevant to our mission here at the medical school. Take the Computer Science category for example. Yes, there are some pretty IT-specific books that may not mesh with your particular specialty, but there are some real pearls in there as well. And, since September 18th is National IT Professionals Day, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to spotlight this category.

In this category you can find books on computational biology and computer applications for research data.  If you are interested in cyber security, there are books on protecting patient information and accessing legacy data.  And then there’s the Cloud.

So please take a moment to explore this category and see what’s there.  And if you can, thank an IT professional for keeping us rocking and rolling!

ScienceDirect EBS Collection: Psychology

EBS blog psychHave you had a chance yet to review our new collection of ebooks from ScienceDirect? There are over 5000 titles, published between 2013 and 2017, across a wide range of disciplines. Every week we will be highlighting a different category in the Library blog.

Since this week coincides with National Suicide Prevention Week (September 10th – 16th), we have decided to focus on the Psychology category.  In addition to books about  suicide awareness, there are texts on addiction, psychopharmacology, and PTSD.  You will also find a wealth of information ranging from animal-assisted therapy to computer-based applications to caregiver support.  There are educational applications to learning, behavior modification, autism, and stress management.

These ebooks may only be available for the next year.  After that, the best loved, most used titles will be added to our virtual collection.  Please take a few moments to check out what’s available and maybe find the perfect text for you research needs.

EBSCO eBook technical difficulties

EBSCO is experiencing technical difficulties with the eBook collection. If you find that you are having trouble, try using Google Chrome for your browser. The EPUB Full Text book reader seems to be more reliable, so if you have a choice between PDF Full Text and EPUB, choose EPUB.

LibGuide Now Available for ScienceDirect EBS Collection

SD EBS 8-20As we announced last week, we have a special collection of EBooks from ScienceDirect available to the LSUHSC community.  Now a LibGuide has been created to help you navigate this extensive collection and we are still adding titles!    You can access the LibGuide from the left-hand column of the library’s web page or click here.  The most relevant subject headings – such as “Neuroscience” and “Biomedical Science and Medicine” – have been completed and we are in the process of  adding the rest of the collection.

On the right side of the LibGuide, the completed subjects are hyperlinked. Any subject headings that are not hyperlinked are still being processed and we hope to have them completed and hyperlinked by the middle of the week.    Each subject is divided by the year of publication and then the titles are listed alphabetically.  There are some titles in the collection that haven’t actually been published yet and will be added as they become available.

You can browse the varied topics and books in the guide.  Clicking on the title will bring you to the full-text of that ebook.  The guide is also searchable via the box at the upper right, but searching is limited to keywords in the title or authors’ names.

We will have access to this collection through June 2018.  Afterwards, we will be adding the most used titles to our permanent collection.  So please take some time to review the offerings and, if you see something you like, check it out.  Your active input really counts!

The Library is pleased to announce that we have received special funding from the Board of Regents e-Textbook Project, Affordable Learning LOUISiana, to purchase 2 required textbooks for Spring 2017:

Analyzing and conceptualizing the theoretical foundations of nursing by Janice Morse (2017) for NURS 7307 taught by Dr. Gloria Giarratano

Vestibular disorders: a case-study approach to diagnosis and treatment, 3rd ed., by Joseph Furman (2010) for SPTHAUD 7323 taught by Rachel Wood.

These books are available with unlimited users and can be accessed anytime and from anywhere (on or off campus) through the EBSCO eBook Collection.

Dr. Joseph C. Rallo, Commissioner of Higher Education, directed the Board of Regents to find ways that the state could help students with the increasing costs of education and, in particular, textbooks.  The Affordable Learning LOUISiana program is coordinated by LOUIS: the Louisiana Library Network, a consortium of higher education libraries in the state. Through LOUIS, member libraries can participate in a variety of collaborative purchases that help reduce the costs of library resources such as databases, online journals, and ebooks.  LSUHSC-NO has been a member library for many years, and we are grateful for the LOUIS staff and all of their efforts to help improve higher education in the state of Louisiana.

The Library has a large collection of ebooks through a variety of sources, so be sure to check the INNOPAC catalog and our eBooks LibGuide for more information.  For help with remote access, please consult our Off-Campus Access Information.
