A new selection of articles has been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Publications cited in the Faculty Publications database are harvested weekly from a variety of sources, such as PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL, to name a few. In addition to articles they include books, book chapters, papers, editorials, letters to the editor, and meeting abstracts, all authored by at least one member of the LSUHSC-NO community. New NLM/NIH Display at the Ische Library

The Isché Library is pleased to host the National Library of Medicine/National Institutes of Health display: Pictures of Nursing: the Zwerdling Postcard Collection, which explores the relationship of nursing to events in 20th-century life and how nursing was perceived.  For more information on the exhibit, visit the NLM exhibition page.

The exhibit will be in the Library Commons from Monday, March 24th through Friday April 21st.

Two course books added online!

The Library is pleased to announce that we have received special funding from the Board of Regents e-Textbook Project, Affordable Learning LOUISiana, to purchase 2 required textbooks for Spring 2017:

Analyzing and conceptualizing the theoretical foundations of nursing by Janice Morse (2017) for NURS 7307 taught by Dr. Gloria Giarratano

Vestibular disorders: a case-study approach to diagnosis and treatment, 3rd ed., by Joseph Furman (2010) for SPTHAUD 7323 taught by Rachel Wood.

These books are available with unlimited users and can be accessed anytime and from anywhere (on or off campus) through the EBSCO eBook Collection.

Dr. Joseph C. Rallo, Commissioner of Higher Education, directed the Board of Regents to find ways that the state could help students with the increasing costs of education and, in particular, textbooks.  The Affordable Learning LOUISiana program is coordinated by LOUIS: the Louisiana Library Network, a consortium of higher education libraries in the state. Through LOUIS, member libraries can participate in a variety of collaborative purchases that help reduce the costs of library resources such as databases, online journals, and ebooks.  LSUHSC-NO has been a member library for many years, and we are grateful for the LOUIS staff and all of their efforts to help improve higher education in the state of Louisiana.

LSUHSC-NO Nursing School Ranks Among Top 10 in U.S!

The School of Nursing at LSUHSC New Orleans was ranked among the top ten schools in the United States in the inaugural rankings of Nursing Schools Almanac.

Our School of Nursing ranked ninth on the list of Top 100 nursing schools in the United States, second overall in the Southeast, and fifth among public nursing schools in the United States!

Nursing Schools Almanac’s mission is to provide an accurate, complete, and powerful online resource for aspiring nurses to make educational decisions.

Their research team collected data on more than 3,200 nursing schools and campuses throughout the United States and evaluated each school on three dimensions: the institution’s academic prestige and perceived value; the breadth and depth of nursing programs offered; and student success, particularly on the NCLEX national licensure exam.

ClinicalKey for Nursing Course Books

Our subscription to ClinicalKey for Nursing includes several required course books.  Check out the list below.  If the book is also available in print in the library, the call number is included.  Remember, print reserves are available for in-library use during regular hours and for overnight checkout 1 hour before closing.  The online books can be accessed anytime and anywhere by logging into the LSUHSC-New Orleans Citrix program.

PubMed for Nurses

NLM has released a series of videos specifically for Nurses using PubMed. Each video is between 1 and 3 minutes long and includes an exercise or quiz supporting the video content.

ClinicalKey for Nursing update

ClinicalKey for Nursing is now available for use on-campus.  Links to all of the books and journals have been added to our INNOPAC catalog.

Off-campus access is available through the LSUHSC-New Orleans Citrix connection.  If you  have never used Citrix before, you will be prompted to download the Citrix Receiver software the first time you log in.

1. Login to Citrix with your LSUHSC credentials.
2. Install Citrix Receiver if necessary.
3. Open Desktop-New
4. Launch Internet Explorer.
5. Navigate back to this page on the university webpage and use the On Campus link.

Citrix is also available for Macs, iPads, iPhones, and Android devices.

Be sure to check it out!  There are lots of great books, journals, and other tools and resources for you to use.

Remember, Mosby’s Nursing Consult was officially retired by Elsevier on December 31, 2015.

Mosby’s Nursing Consult upgrade January 1, 2016

Mosby’s Nursing Consult is getting a face-lift AND a new name, ClinicalKey for Nursing!  Elsevier is upgrading its popular online nursing resource effective January 1, 2016.  Our staff is currently working with Elsevier on this transition, and we hope to have it all running smoothly for the start of the Spring semester.  We are almost up-and-running, but there are still some issues, primarily with the off-campus access.  We will share the news on the blog when everything is fixed.

The new platform includes most of the same content with some exceptions, particularly where outdated information is concerned.  You will find the same, great books and journals, including books such as “Goldman-Cecil Medicine,” “Harriet Lane Handbook,” and “Sheehy’s Emergency Nursing,” and journals like “Nurse Leader,” “Journal for Nurse Practitioners,” and “Nursing Clinics of North America.”  The journal coverage goes back to 2007 where available, and we do have some of the older coverage on the ScienceDirect platform.  As with Mosby’s Nursing Consult, the books are updated with newer editions as the they are released.  Be sure to check our INNOPAC library catalog for the most accurate record of what we have.

ClinicalKey for Nursing is also a Point-of-Care tool that is designed to help nurses find information quickly.  It includes over 1,500 drug monographs, 300 procedural videos, and 175 disease topic pages.

Nursing Postcards

The National Library of Medicine houses the Michael Zwerdling Nursing Postcard Collection of nearly 2500 postcards, “published in the United States and internationally, depicting the nursing profession, the social history of nursing, the perception of nursing in various cultures, the role of military nurses, and other related themes.” The cards date from between 1893 and 2002. Approximately 600 of the postcards have been digitized by the Images from the History of Medicine section of the History of Medicine Division of NLM.

It’s AcWriMo 2013!

Inspired by the hugely successful NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), PhD2Published, a blog dedicated to helping academics publish, has announced that November is also AcWriMo (Academic Writing Month).

AcWriMo is a month long academic write-a-thon for academics at all stages of their careers. ?áPhD2Published will support writers with dedicated posts about academic writing and thousands of Tweets to encourage you to keep going throughout the month.

According to their website:

“There are 6 basic rules:

1. Decide on your goal. You might count words, hours put in or projects achieved ÔÇô itÔÇÖs up to you. But try and push yourself a bit. (And if you need help counting our?áPhDometer app?áÔÇô the proceeds from which help fund this month-long writing extravaganza ÔÇô was designed for just that!)

2. Declare it! Basically, just sign up on the?áAcWriMo 2013 Writing Accountability Spreadsheet?áand fill in the sections on what youÔÇÖd like to achieve by the end of the month. Being accountable is key to this working for you. You need to feel a bit of pressure to get the work done. So sign up and add your goals as soon as you can.

3. Draft a strategy. DonÔÇÖt start AcWriMo without doing a bit of planning and preparation. Get some reading done, carve out time slots in your schedule to dedicate to writing, even buy your favorite coffee. Sort out whatever youÔÇÖll need to write, and get it done now, there wonÔÇÖt be time when November comes around.

4. Discuss your progress. OK so being on Twitter and Facebook with us all day isn’t acceptable ÔÇô you’ve got work to do ÔÇô but checking-in at certain times is really important! We want to know how youÔÇÖre getting on? What is working for you and what isn’t? Do you need help? Do you want to share a writing triumph? (YouÔÇÖll find most discussion about AcWriMo on Twitter using the?á#AcWriMo?áhashtag, but if?áFacebook?áis more your thing, go there. Or use your own blog to keep in touch. You can even write little updates you want to share in the?áspreadsheet.)

5. DonÔÇÖt slack off. As participant Bettina said of the first AcWriMo, you must ÔÇÿwrite like thereÔÇÖs no December!ÔÇÖ If you push yourself, youÔÇÖll quickly discover the tips and techniques that work best for YOU and thatÔÇÖll save you even more time in the long-run.

6. Declare your results. ItÔÇÖs great to use the spreadsheet everyday (or as often as you can) to chart how youÔÇÖre getting on, but even if you canÔÇÖt do that, you MUST announce your results at the end of the month. Our writing community benefits not only from sharing in your achievements, but knowing what didn’t work and being reminded that, at the end of the day, weÔÇÖre all human!”

So everyone should go forth and WRITE… That’s what I’ll be doing this month!
